Advantages of LVM

• Filesystems can extend across multiple disks.

• The hardware storage configuration is hidden from the software so it can be changed without needing to stop applications or unmount filesystems etc.

• Data can be rearranged on disks e.g. empyting a hot-swappable disk before removing it.

• Device snapshots can be taken for consistent backups or to test the effect of changes without affecting the real data.
