• GNU Project started by Richard Stallman in 1985. GNU's not Unix.

• First free software program was GNU Emacs.

• GDB (GNU debugger) was written in order to debug Emacs, first released in 1986.

• GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) first released in 1987.

• Business models develop around Open Source: Cygnus (1989), Red Hat (1993).
