The udev conundrum (2)
All device-mapper devices are dynamic by design and we allow users to choose what to call them. They can also be renamed. We had no need for legacy fixed names corresponding to the device-numbers like sda1, sda2 etc. so chose not to implement them. The device nodes are created in a sub-directory of /dev and given whatever name the user requests.
These legacy names are severely restricted in length and were required in the kernel so device-mapper simply put the minor number after a prefix of “dm-”. They were not intended for userspace use.
