#Ok, I understand what headspacing is and why it's so important. What I'm
#uncertain of is: How is improper headspacing corrected?
It depends on the cause of the improper headspace. The problem we are up
against here is improper headspace doesn't just happen - it's caused by
something. We need to find and fix whatever problem it is that caused of the
improper headspace first. Once we have done that, we can then fix the improper
headspace problem. Let me see if I can give you a couple of examples.
If excessive headspace is caused by corrosion of the chamber's shoulder then
removing the barrel, re-cutting the chamber, and re-installing and head spacing
the barrel will fix both problems. If excessive headspace is caused worn or
damaged locking lugs on the bolt then we need to replace the bolt and re-set
the headspace as needed.
Another, equally dangerous, type of improper headspace is insufficient
headspace (chamber too short). This may be caused by manufacturing error
(chamber cut incorrectly) or by debris left in the chamber (commonly the
shoulder and neck left in the chamber from a previous case failure). If the
problem is due to manufacturing error it can usually be fixed by reaming the
chamber to proper length. If it is debris in the chamber it can usually be
fixed by removing the debris.

# How does a go/no-go
#gauge work? Why is it more critical in some firearms and not others? For
#instance, I can order a replacement barrel for an M1911 or Ruger 10/22 and
#pretty much just drop it in however, if I bought a replacement barrel for an
#AR-15 or Remington 700, I'd need to take it to a gunsmith to install it and
#have the headspace checked (I'm guessing that it's more critical when more
#powerful cartridges are used?).
