# I'm thinking about getting a .223 in a bolt action, my question is if
# I'm only going to shoot 45 to 55gr bullets I wouldn't need a 1 in9
# twist? A 1 in 12 would shoot the lighter bullets more accurately than
# the 1 in 9 wouldn't it? I would only want a 1 in 9 if I was planing on
# using the 62 or 69gr bullets right? Please set me straight on this.

#From my own experience, you can stabilize the lighter bullets in a faster
(1 in 9) barrel but you cannot stabilize the heavier bullets in a slower
barrel (1 in 12 or 1 in 14). I have shot 42 grain bullets through a 1 in 9
barrel with no problem.

If you are never going to shoot anything heavier than 55 grains, then 1 in
12 is fine. If you are, then get a 1 in 9. This should be good up to about
69 grain bullets. Anything greater, (e.g., 72 to 80 grain match bullets by
Sierra and Berger) require 1 in 7, but this is usually reserved for 600
yard service rifle competitions.
