I'd like to make a few points if I may.

I've discovered, just like many others, that you really don't have to
concede those high aspect shots... In the last tour in the combat theatre
with the F4F and F6F against Zekes, some of the F6F drivers were using high
aspect shots almost exclusively. I think I was fired upon in every single
merge, and I'm talking about very determined attempts! They pulled hard into
me for the shot, and fired long bursts in the hope of getting a hit, and I
never suffered a single HO death! I did take the odd hit or two, because
some of those guys were very skilful at what they were doing, but none that
resulted in a kill! I use the word skill, because although it certainly
doesn't compare with sound BFM, I was still amazed at their ability to keep
their nose on me during my evasive entry to the merge and some of them were
excellent shots. Even so, despite some very determined attacks, none
succeeded, and that's an important point. There is a lot of satisfaction in
defeating repeated high aspect attacks, and then getting the kill yourself
because they became frustrated and stayed in the fight longer than they
should have and were forced to surrender their 6 O'clock in a late attempt
to extend.

I admit that when it does happen, getting shot HO may not be much fun, but
it doesn't have to happen unless you lose your concentration. In that last
tour, they really didn't have much choice unless they started with a
respectable energy advantage. The high aspect shot was the right thing to do
from a tactical perspective. If you have a much, higher high aspect
Probability of a Kill (PK) than your opponent, it makes sense to take the
shot if you can, particularly when it may be the only chance you get! In
WWII the USAAF applied the same tactical doctrine, and favoured high aspect
shots for exactly the same reasons, the combination of less manoeuvrable
aircraft with better guns and lightly armoured targets made it so. That's
why, in those circumstances, it could even be described as more realistic.
After all, those guys in the Combat Theatre were only doing what their real
world counterparts did sixty years ago! There is an alternative! Instead of
becoming bored you can take the time to learn effective evasive merge entry
manoeuvres, accept the challenge, enjoy the learning process just as you did
with Air Warrior... Trust me, I think you will have fun with it!
